Ragdoll Cats

There is an old wives tale that Ragdoll cats are immune to pain - this is absolutely not true! The Ragdoll is a large, imposing and powerful cat with distinctive markings.

In brief

  • Large and powerful, yet extremely laid back, trusting and relaxed
  • Tolerant with most family situations
  • May require some grooming to help with mats and tangles

Origins

When this cat is picked up, it becomes very relaxed and floppy, like a ragdoll, which is how it got the name. The first Ragdoll kittens were probably the result of mating between a white Persian queen (female) and a Birman or Birman-type tom. They were bred in California in the 1960's.

Personality, characteristics and temperament

There is an old wives tale that Ragdoll cats are immune to pain - this is absolutely not true! The Ragdoll is a large, imposing and powerful cat with distinctive markings. However its temperament is the opposite. They're extremely relaxed. Their coats are silky, dense and of medium length. They're content and undemanding as pets and tend to tolerate most situations, making them wonderful pets for respectful children as well as adults.

Health and Care

Ragdolls live for 10-12 years on average, though they do not mature until they reach 3 or 4 years old. The Ragdoll is a healthy breed in general, although an annual health check from the age of 8 is recommended. They don't require regular grooming to keep their gorgeous coats in good condition, although if the grooming process is started early, they will soon become used to it and enjoy all of the attention!

Conclusion

The Ragdoll is possibly the most laid back of all the domestic cat breeds. Their carefree, relaxed natures make them extremely gentle, loyal and devoted pets. This breed wouldn't really be the best pet for a boisterous child as they still demand some peace and quiet, but as long the child knew not to take advantage of the Ragdoll's sweet nature, they would get along just fine.
