Mastering Flea Control in Your Home and Garden

Owning a pet is a wonderful experience for you and your family. But if your dog or cat contracts fleas and brings them into your living space, it can quickly make life miserable for everyone involved – your pet, your family and yourself. Here we take a look at some of the easiest ways to prevent this scenario, master flea control for dogs and cats once and for all, and return happiness to your home.

Flea Control for Dogs and Cats

Prevention is better than cure, as the old saying goes; and this is particularly true in the case of fleas. The easiest way to keep your home flea-free is by preventing your pet from bringing them into your home in the first place. The Advantage Family offers effective flea prevention options for your furry friend – this includes Advocate®, a monthly spot-on treatment, and Seresto®, a collar that kills fleas for up to eight months at a time. Moreover, these products also work effectively to kill flea larvae in your home.

How the Advocate spot-on treatment works

This is a quick, safe and highly effective means of protecting your pet from the misery of fleas. The solution is applied directly to your dog or cat’s skin once a month. It’s also water-resistant^, so it will still be effective even if they decide to roll in mud. Just remember to use a soap-free shampoo when washing your pet.

Advocate successfully breaks the flea lifecycle and frees your dog or cat from the distress fleas can cause. It stops fleas from feeding on your pet within minutes of contact and kills adult fleas fast. Advocate kills reinfesting fleas in less than one hour.

As a bonus, Advocate also protects your pet against other parasites including heartworm, hookworms, roundworms, whipworm and mites as well as lice in dogs and lungworm in cats, giving you additional peace of mind that you are protecting the greater health of your pet.

How the Seresto Collar works

We’re all busy, and sometimes it’s possible to forget to give your pet a flea treatment once a month. If this sounds like you, a long-acting treatment could be a better option. Seresto keeps your pet protected from fleas for up to eight months at a time.

Seresto is comfortable for your pet to wear. The polymer matrix ensures that your pet will be protected from fleas by the continuous release of a low-dose of active ingredients.

Flea Control for Your Home

If fleas have already become a problem in your home, the first step is to treat your pets as soon as possible to break the flea lifecycle. The next step is to tackle your house – here are a few tips!

Clean your house rigorously

All the areas of your home that your pet frequents should be vacuumed regularly. This particularly applies to carpeted areas of the house and any furniture that your pet is allowed to sit on, as these can harbour flea eggs, larvae and pupae. If you travel with your pet, the same principle applies to the interior of your car. Vacuuming regularly will get rid of some of those immature flea stages. After vacuuming, dispose of the vacuum bag.

In a particularly heavy flea infestation you may also need to use a registered environmental spray or a flea bomb to get on top of the problem more quickly. Always check the label before applying.

Flea control on and around your dog or cat bed

Your pet’s bedding, blanket and any other washable items such as fabric toys should be washed frequently in the hottest water they can withstand. Check the laundering instructions on each product to determine the maximum washing temperature. Bedding can also be placed in direct sunlight - immature flea stages cannot tolerate the harsh sunlight.

Don't forget the garden

It’s also important to keep your garden neat, as this can be another breeding ground for fleas. Mow your lawn regularly and make sure you rake up any leaves or clippings. Be aware that fleas can be brought into the garden by wildlife or the wandering neighbourhood cat. If possible, try to restrict their access to your garden and any other outdoor areas that your pet may frequent. Avoid allowing access to any dirt areas under the house as this area is a good breeding ground for fleas.

Enjoy the freedom flea control brings

Keeping your furry friend flea-free needn’t be a tedious or time-consuming task. By protecting your pet with an effective flea control treatment and taking care to maintain your house and garden you and your pets can get on with enjoying an itch-free life!
