Enjoy a Safe Holiday with Pets

No holiday is the same without your furry family member – so include them! These days there are more and more pet-friendly accommodation, dining and activity options, which make it even more enticing to bring them along. However, there are a few extra things to take into consideration to ensure you enjoy a safe holiday with your pet. Preparation is key, so make sure your holiday with pets goes off without a hitch with these helpful tips.

Transport

Think about how to make the journey as comfortable as possible for your pet. Are you travelling by road or plane, and what carriers or harnesses do you need to ensure your pet is secure? If you’re unsure, ask your vet for advice.

If travelling by car, it is best not to feed your pet before you leave. Be sure to bring along items that are familiar to your pet to reduce anxiety. This might be their favourite toys or a comforting blanket.

But most importantly: never leave your pet unattended in a car – even if the windows are down or it is winter!

Toilet breaks and hydration

When holidaying with pets by car, make sure you take regular breaks. This means stopping every 2-3 hours which will coincide with your regular stop, revive, survive breaks. Make sure you pack enough water for both you and your pet in case there isn’t any available when you stop. Portable water bowls are really handy to pull out on breaks during car trips.

Accommodation

Make sure you have booked accommodation that is ‘pet-friendly’. There’s nothing less pleasant than driving around for hours looking for somewhere that accepts pets. However, with a bit of research, you will find that there are a number of options available for those holidaying with pets. Camping is a popular option in the warmer months, but many self-catered houses and even hotels will also welcome your furry family member.

Packing

Plan well in advance to make sure you’re not caught short while on the road - start a packing list and add to it as you go along. Tick off each item as you add it to your luggage to reduce the stress leading up to your holiday with your pets.

Emergencies

Unfortunately, when you holiday with pets there’s always a risk of injury or illness and it’s best to be prepared. Make sure to have your vet’s details with you and search for a local vet you could see should an emergency arise at your destination.

Identification

Ensure your pet has a microchip and your details are up to date in case they become separated from you. If they get lost in an unfamiliar area and someone else finds them, this is the best way to ensure they are returned to you. For more information, contact your local vet before you leave.

Ward against fleas and ticks

Fleas may be waiting for your pet at your holiday destination, especially if you plan to spend time in the great outdoors. Ensure your pets’ flea protection is up to date to protect your cat or dog from fleas in their holiday environment.

Paralysis ticks inject a neurotoxin while feeding on pets, which causes progressive paralysis. Some popular destinations you might consider for your holiday with your pets, such as the East Coast of Australia, are hot spots for paralysis ticks. If you’re unsure if your holiday destination is a tick area, you can call a local vet to find out.

When travelling with your dog to a paralysis tick area, it’s important to protect your pet from the potentially fatal threat. Be sure to use a tick prevention product that kills ticks before they take a blood meal and search your pet for ticks daily.

Seresto Flea & Tick* Collar

The Seresto Collar provides up to 8 months’ flea protection and 4-month tick control for your dog. Because Seresto repels and kills paralysis ticks before they bite, it protects your dog from the dangers of paralysis ticks. And because it protects for months at a time, you can enjoy as many spontaneous holidays with your pets as you like!
